After the candidate has accepted the job offer, you can begin the onboarding process.  The student will need to be entered into the payroll system, complete form W-4 and set up direct deposit. They may also need to complete a background check and I-9 employment eligibility verification. Requirements may differ by department, so it’s best to collaborate with your HR liaison to ensure the correct process is followed and you provide a smooth transition for your student employee.

One of the most important aspects of employing students is orienting them to their new job and environment. A well-planned onboarding process can help new employees integrate into a department, understand their role and responsibilities and feel welcome, leading to increased productivity, engagement and retention.
