This monthly newsletter provides a snapshot of stories and events relevant to biomedical engineering department faculty and staff. Don’t forget to complete your annual DEPA requirement

All faculty – and any other employee or student with responsibility for the design, conduct or reporting of research – must disclose any significant financial interest and external professional activity that could compromise university decision making or duties. Projects and protocols submitted to the Office of Grants and Contracts or to the Institutional Review Board cannot receive approval until this an annual Disclosure of External Professional Activities (DEPA) is submitted, reviewed and approved.

Bio-inspired Robotics: The interface of biology and engineering

Bio-inspired robotics has motivated the development of technology from artificial muscles and medical devices to gecko-inspired adhesives and robots that run, fly and swim. The course Bio-inspired Robotics introduces engineers to this area of study.

Data Management Plan Workshop

  • Thursday, March 10 at 11 a.m.
  • The Research & Innovation Office on campus will host an online workshop to help faculty understand how to initiate and create a Data Management Plan (DMP). Data Librarian Jordan Wrigley from the Center for Research Data and Digital Scholarship (CRDDS) who will walk you through several free resources and tools.
  • Registration must be completed online in advance.

Webinar: Professor Barthelat explores how biological materials can inspire better engineering materials

  • Wednesday, March 16 at 12 p.m.
  • Mechanical Engineering Professor Francois Barthelat is hosting a webinar that explores how seashells, fish fins and other biological materials can inspire better engineering materials in the future.

Third Converge Virtual Forum on Boulder County Fires

  • Thursday, March 31 at 2 p.m.
  • This session will be convened by the leadership of CO-LABS and will highlight new studies led by researchers in federal scientific research labs located in Colorado. Participants from all disciplines and from any organization or institution are welcome to attend.

CEAS co-sponsoring History of Women in Jazz

  • Tuesday, March 29 at 6 p.m.
  • An understanding of jazz would not be complete without highlighting the influence and contributions of women—women such as Bessie Smith, Valaida Snow, Mildred Bailey, Mary Lou Williams, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Sarah Vaughn. This program explores their personal lives, their ability to read music, perform and survive in a time when jazz was considered “a man’s world”. Performance by master flutist and jazz historian, Galen, will begin the program.
