Giving in Action: Art and Art History

Every gift to the Department of Art and Art History makes a difference. Your donation helps our students succeed, opens avenues for innovation, and funds research that benefits our communities among numerous other avenues that matter most to our donors, students or faculty.

The Department of Art and Art History is the beneficiary of the generosity of its partners and donors—people who, like us, deeply value the training of the next generation of artists, and the nurturing of the love of art and its history. We have, for example, received an endowment for scholarships for undergraduates from rural Colorado (the Addison Fellowship) along with many donations to our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Scholarship fund. These gifts make a huge difference to the ability of minority and underrepresented students, amongst others, to study art and eventually pursue a career in the arts. We are extremely grateful for all these gifts, both large and small, and we welcome and celebrate our partnerships with the broader arts community, which are crucial to accomplishing our core mission.

I’m the daughter of Mexican immigrants. My grandfathers told me stories and instilled in me a passion for Precolumbian art. When I looked into the field, there weren’t many people who looked like me. I took that frustration and I thought—I need to be in this field, and I need to stay in this field. I needed the scholarships, but I also needed the emotional support. Scholarships communicate to me that I’m wanted, that I’m needed, and the work I’m doing is valuable. Scholarships can change people’s lives. I came to a great community—CU has always really been here for me.

Donor-Supported Opportunities

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion scholarship

In 2020, the Department of Art and Art History launched a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion scholarship with a zoom fundraiser and were able to endow it that year. The department did another zoom fundraiser in 2021 and brought the fund to almost $50,000. They are building on the scholarship, creating a DEI focused peer-to-peer mentoring program and an AAH Creative Community. They also received a President's Fund Award to help support mentoring and creative community work, so the scholarship is fully integrated into the work of the department, and the students have support for success that goes beyond tuition.

I had never been to an art museum or gallery until college and that first visit captivated me. CU Boulder for graduate school provided the community, the faculty and the resources I needed to grow as an artists. I know that I can help open up silos and promote resources to young aspiring artists.
