Leadership Development
Along with the academic curriculum, our cadets also prepare for their future leadership roles by completing the General Military Course (GMC), attending Field Training, and competing for a Professional Officer Course (POC) position.
General Military Course
The General Military Course (GMC) comprises your first one-to-two years in Air Force ROTC.
Your Freshman year, you will have one hour of AS100 class (Heritage and Values) and attend Leadership Laboratory. As an AS100 (freshman) you will learn about customs and courtesies, health and physical fitness, drill and ceremonies, and participate in leadership exercises. You are not required to have previous knowledge since the AS100 year is geared towards learning and development as a cadet.
Your Sophomore year, you will have one hour of AS200 class (Team and Leadership Fundamentals) and attend Leadership Laboratory. As an AS200 (sophomore) you will be given the opportunity to demonstrate competency in customs and courtesies, drill and ceremonies, and fundamental management skills. This year will prepare you for Field Training. You will be expected to know the basics and build upon the foundations created in the AS100 year.
If you are an AS250 (joined the program as a sophomore), you are required to take the AS100 and AS200 class concurrently. Additionally, you will be considered an AS200 for during Leadership Laboratory. To succeed, you must put in the time and effort inside and outside Leadership Laboratory to catch up on customs and courtesies, drill and ceremonies, and leadership development.
Field Training
During the summer between your sophomore and junior year, you will participate in Field Training, the AFROTC version of Basic Military Training (BMT). It is a two-week encampment that includes physical conditioning, weapons, and survival training. Field Training is currently held at Maxwell AFB, Montgomery, AL. At Field Training you will be evaluated on your leadership skills and leadership potential. You will be provided multiple opportunities to expand your skills as both a leader and a team member.
Professional Officer Course
The Professional Officer Course (POC) comprises your last two years in AFROTC.
Your Junior year, you will attend AS300 class (Leading People and Effective Communication) twice a week for a total of three hours. You will also attend Leadership Laboratory as a cadet officer. You will be in charge of managing, creating, and executing lesson plans every week for cadet activities. You will be in charge of fellow cadets from the beginning. The number of cadets ranges from two to twenty. During your AS300 year, you will develop your leadership style and learn how to be an effective leader in real-time.
Your Senior year, you will attend AS400 class (National Security/Leadership Responsibilities/Commissioning Preparation) twice a week for a total of three hours. You will also attend Leadership Laboratory as a cadet officer. You will be a senior officer with a large amount of responsibility over the actions of the entire cadet wing. You will use the leadership skills developed in the AS300 year to lead the wing in cadet activities and hone your leadership skills in preparation for commissioning and entry into active duty.
