IUT Dates & Deadlines
You should apply to IUT during the same semester you meet (or will meet) the IUT Requirements:
- If you meet (or will meet) the IUT Requirements by the end of the Fall term, apply by the October 1st Registration Access Deadline for Spring Admission.
- If you meet (or will meet) the IUT Requirements by the end of the Spring term, apply by the March 1st Registration Access Deadline for Summer Admission.
- If you meet (or will meet) the IUT Requirements by the end of the Summer term (by enrolling in summer coursework), apply by the June 1st Registration Access Deadline for Fall Admission.
- Please be aware that Fall Admission may not be available for all colleges/schools/programs.
Please see the IUT Dates & Deadlines webpage for more information.
Applying by the Registration Access Deadline will allow your IUT Application for "On Track" and/or "Admitted" status consideration. If granted either status, you would then have access to register for restricted classes during your assigned enrollment date and time. You are strongly advised to apply by the Registration Access Deadline for full consideration and greater course availability. However, you may continue to apply until the final deadline for your intended college/school/program. Please see the IUT Dates & Deadlines webpage for more information.
Please refer to the Registration Access and Final Deadlines for each term in the sidebar of this webpage. However, you are strongly advised to apply the Registration Access Deadline for full consideration and greater course availability. Please see the IUT Dates & Deadlines webpage for more information.
IUT Applications received after the Registration Access Deadline are considered on a space-available basis until the Final Application Deadline. IUT Applications received after the Final Application Deadline are processed for the following term. Please see the IUT Dates & Deadlines webpage for more information.
If you have completed your IUT requirements or you are “On Track” to complete your IUT requirements by the end of the Spring semester, then you should apply by the March 1st IUT Registration Access Deadline for summer admission. If you are "On Track" and/or "Admitted", starting in your intended college/school/program in the summer will give you increased access to restricted fall courses. Additionally, being admitted for the summer term does not require you to take summer classes.
You should apply to IUT during the same semester you meet (or will meet) the IUT Requirements:
- If you meet (or will meet) the IUT Requirements by the end of the Spring term, apply by the March 1st Registration Access Deadline for Summer Admission.
- If you meet (or will meet) the IUT Requirements by the end of the Summer term (by enrolling in summer coursework), apply by the June 1st Registration Access Deadline for Fall Admission.

Applications submitted after 12pm (noon) on Census will be considered for the following semester. Please see the IUT Dates & Deadlines webpage for more information and specific census dates.

Please see the section on the IUT main page titled, “Understand the IUT Admissions Process” for IUT Application Status definitions for a general understanding. You should also refer to the IUT web page and denial email of the college/school/program where you applied for additional information. It is recommended that you schedule an appointment with your current academic advisor to adjust your course schedule for the following semester.
Colleges/schools/programs that do not offer "On Track" status will consider IUT Applications submitted at the Registration Access Deadlines for "Admitted" or "Deferred" status. After the Registration Access Deadline, colleges/schools/programs accept IUT Applications until the Final Application Deadline, on a space-available basis.
Summer & Fall IUT Applications
- The IUT Application term is Summer because if you apply by the March 1st Registration Access Deadline and your IUT Application is “Accepted” or “On Track,” you can register for Summer semester courses in March and/or Fall semester courses in April during your assigned registration appointment.
- If your IUT Application is approved for Summer 2024, any associated program/major and tuition changes will be effective at the start of the Summer 2024 session. You are not required to enroll in summer coursework at CU Boulder.
- If you wait for the Fall June 1st Registration Access Deadline, you may have less access to courses and your intended IUT college/school/program may be full due to space limitations.
- If you meet (or will meet) your IUT Requirements by the end of the Spring term, you should apply by the March 1st Registration Access Deadline for Summer Admission
- If you apply for Summer by March 1st and meet “On Track” or “Admitted” IUT Application status, your IUT will be given priority and you:

- will have access to your new academic advisor assignment in Buff Portal Advising earlier.
- will receive priority consideration for colleges/schools/programs with limited space availability.

Major Changes (Within the Same College/School/Program)
The Intra-University Transfer (IUT) Application is only for students wishing to change, add, or drop a major in two different colleges/schools/programs. If you would like to change, add, or drop a major, minor, or certificate within your current college/school/program, please meet with your current academic advisor. For more information, visit the Office of the Registrar website.
The IUT Application is only used to change, add, or drop one major at time for each college school or program.
- To pursue a double major in your intended college/school/program, choose one of your intended majors for the IUT Application. If you are admitted to your intended college/school/program, you can then work with your assigned academic advisor to declare an additional major
- Changing or adding a major in the same college/school/program is not considered an Intra-University Transfer (IUT), visit the Office of the Registrar website to learn how to change, add, or drop a major/minor/certificate within the same college/school/program
IUT Considerations
When you change, add, or drop a college/school/program your tuition bill and financial aid may change if the rates for your new college/school/program are different from your current college/school/program. It is recommended that you view the Bursar's Office tuition rates by school, college and program and that you consult the Office of Financial Aid and/or scholarship donor (if applicable).
Minors and certificates are automatically kept in your degree plan during the IUT process. The only exception is if your minor is incompatible with your major in your new college/school/program. If you are unsure whether your minor has specific eligibility requirements, check with an academic advisor for the minor or refer to the CU Boulder catalog. If you would like to add or drop a minor, please meet with your current academic advisor.
Please be aware that if you select an IUT "Change", all majors in your college will be dropped. In order to keep one of your majors in your current college/school/program and then switch the other, you will need to drop the major you do not want through your college/school/program's major drop process and then add your new major in the college where you would like to apply for an Intra-University Transfer (IUT). Please see the "Can I continue to pursue my minor or certificate?" FAQ for more information about minors.
IUT Eligibility
Incoming first-year and transfer students should complete a major change request form in their CU Boulder Admissions application, before their first day of classes at CU Boulder.
Incoming first-year and transfer students do not need an Intra-University Transfer (IUT) Application until after their first day of classes.
The Intra-University Transfer (IUT) Application on this website is only available for current CU Boulder undergraduate students. CU Boulder graduate students should contact the Graduate School for more information and next steps.
Please see the section on the IUT main page titled, “Understand the IUT Admissions Process” for IUT Application Status definitions. Please also refer to the IUT webpage of the college/school/program where you intend to apply for specific “On Track” requirements.
If you are not eligible for "On Track" status, but you will meet the IUT requirements by the end of the term, you can still apply by the Registration Access Deadline.
If you will not meet the IUT Requirements by the end of the term, please wait to apply until you have met the “On Track” and/or IUT Requirements for your intended college/school/program.
