Frequently Asked Questions

General Information

Is the Rec Center open during construction?
The University Recreation Center will remain open during the entire construction process. Inevitably, there will be times in which certain areas of the building may have reduced access due to the construction process. Recreational Services will do its best to make sure patrons are informed as far in advance as possible.
When is the renovation starting?
The project started in June 2012.  Major construction will begin October 2012.
What is the scope of this project?
The project is to fully renovate and expand the existing Student Recreation Center, increasing the size of the center by nearly 30%.

Key elements of this project include:

  • Doubling Strength and Conditioning Spaces for drop-in weight & cardiovascular fitness training
  • Adding an Indoor Turf, Multi-Activity Gym for programmed and informal recreation
  • Adding an Outdoor Aquatics Facility & Deck Area
  • Replacing/Upgrading Building HVAC, Roof, Fire Suppression Systems and Access
  • Adding a Wellness & Athletic Training Suite for drop-in and program usage
  • Doubling Multi-Purpose Group Fitness Studio Space for a range of fitness classes, martial arts, and drop-in dance and fitness activities
  • Renovating all spaces for the general and special needs of students, including all locker/restrooms (also adding gender inclusive spaces), lobby and meeting spaces
  • Reconstructing the existing, failing Ice Rink and related systems
  • Renovating 2 existing Gyms, including adding new wood floor
  • Replacing the Outdoor Tennis Court
  • Building a state-of-the-art Climbing Gym with Bouldering Area
When will the expansion and renovation be finished?
Completion of major construction will be Spring 2014

Locker Rooms

Will there always be a locker room open during construction?
Yes! Temporary facilities will be provided by dividing the Women’s Locker Room while the new locker rooms are under construction.
Will I be able to rent a locker in the summer?
No, demolition of the men’s locker room and changes in the women’s locker during the renovation prevents the rental of summer lockers.
Will I be able to rent a locker in Fall 2012?
Yes, you can rent a locker in the Fall.  Only small lockers will be available until new locker rooms are complete.
How many showers will there be in the new locker rooms?
There will be 14 showers in the dry locker rooms, including 1 ADA shower and 9 showers with attached dry changing areas.

Bike Racks

Where have all of the bike racks been relocated?
Bike racks have been added to the Rec Center Entrance. We added (2) more racks near the main entrance where the concrete benches used to be. We also added (4) bike racks to the concrete pad between Lot 380 and the Rec Lawn.

Bike racks have also been added to Lot 384 (north side of rec center).

Outdoor Pool

What is the length/depth of the outdoor swimming pool?
The outdoor pool will have two standard 25 yard lap lanes ranging in depth from 3.5 to 4 feet.  In general, the outdoor pool will be 3.5 feet deep.
Will there be a rinse off space outside for the pool?
Yes, showers will be provided on the outdoor pool deck, adjacent to the pool.
Will the pool be open through the winter?
It is anticipated that the outdoor pool will be open in mid-April and will close for the winter in October.
