Seedling Biosystems is a Boulder-based biotechnology startup pioneering sustainable, plant-based production of rare and essential biological ingredients used in foods, cosmetics and therapeutics. Co-founded by Brian DeDecker (CU Boulder Department of Molecular, Cellular & Developmental Biology) and former student Simon Kalmus , the company emerged from collaborative research efforts at the university. Their innovative platform leverages genetically engineered soybeans to produce compounds traditionally sourced from environmentally sensitive origins, such as shark-derived squalene and yew tree-derived paclitaxel, aiming to reduce ecological impact and enhance accessibility.
