Problem

Waste water treatment is essential for preventing disease and protecting the environment, but current treatment processes are energy intensive and emit greenhouse gas due to fossil fuel and organic degradation.

Solution

Developed by CU Boulder researchers Jason Ren and Lu Lu, this method not only addresses the reduction of fossil fuel consumption in wastewater treatment, but also utilizes the wastewater as both a carbon sink and energy source for active CO2 mitigation from sources such as flue gas.
