Montez Butts

Montez is the Director of the University Memorial Center at the University of Colorado Boulder, bringing over 20 years of experience in Residence Life, Student Life and Social Justice Education. His career spans leadership roles at the University of Northern Colorado and the University of Colorado Boulder, where he has been dedicated to fostering inclusive and supportive campus environments. 

Originally from Detroit, MI, Montez and his fraternal twin brother moved with their mother to Denver, CO, seeking greater educational opportunities. He was raised in Denver’s historic Five Points neighborhood and is a proud first-generation college graduate. Montez earned dual bachelor's degrees—a B.A. in Sociology with an emphasis in Criminal Justice and a B.A. in Speech Communication with an emphasis in Human Communication. He went on to obtain a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, specializing in Higher Education Student Affairs Leadership. Currently, he is pursuing a doctorate in Educational Leadership for Educational Equity, with a focus on Urban and Diverse Communities, at the University of Colorado Denver. 

Passionate about student development, equity, and social justice, Montez remains committed to creating meaningful educational experiences that empower students and cultivate community.
