Student employee

Working on campus during college offers many benefits. You can earn money while you gain experience, meet new people and build a professional network. Unlike many off-campus jobs, working on campus offers flexibility with scheduling, meaning your academics can remain your priority. As a student, you can’t ask for a better option than to work while you learn.

There are many opportunities to work at CU Boulder, from office positions to customer service roles. Here are a few perks of working at an on-campus job.

1. Meet new people

The other students you work with at your on-campus job can quickly become your new friends. Departments like the Rec Center, Environmental Center, University Memorial Center and Campus Dining Services are some of the largest employers of students. On-campus jobs allow you to spend time with fellow Buffs and get to know them.

2. Enjoy a flexible schedule

One of the major perks of working at an on-campus job is flexibility. Most on-campus jobs and paid research studies offer flexible scheduling around your classes and other commitments. Many students work between 10 and 15 hours weekly, with 25 hours per week maximum for the fall and spring semesters. At your on-campus job, your academics remain the priority.

3. Learn to manage money

Having a job means learning to manage the money you earn. Financial literacy is a lifelong skill. You can learn to budget and save depending on your needs and goals. Consider whether you need the income for immediate expenses, fun adventures or next semester’s tuition. Keep track of your finances using free personal finance apps or your financial institution’s online banking system.

4. Gain experience and skills for your resume

Whatever department you work in, your student job can help you develop professional skills and gain experience to include on your resume. Skills learned at on-campus jobs can often apply to positions after college. Typical skills include communication, problem-solving, customer service, time management and leadership.

Many student jobs are specific to different industries and can teach you technical skills, such as graphic design, social media, data analytics and research. Learn more about applying the experience gained through an on-campus job to your internship or job search with help from Career Services

Working on campus can help you discover new interests and potential career paths. For example, working in Student Affairs Communication and Marketing could spark an interest in graphic design. Working for the Basic Needs Center or Volunteer Resource Center could ignite a passion for public service. College offers many paths to try new things.

6. Build your network

On-campus jobs allow you to work more closely with faculty and staff. They can become mentors and potentially lead to future internships or research opportunities. Faculty or staff supervisors can provide letters of recommendation or serve as professional references later. Building your network in college can help you throughout your career.

7. Find jobs at all levels

Student Affairs is the largest employer of students on campus. You can find jobs at all levels covering a wide variety of interests. You also have the opportunity to grow and gain responsibilities during your time at CU Boulder. Whatever your interests, there’s something for everyone.
