Buffs on the roam

Are you ready to let your competitive spirit out? Do you want to meet fellow Buffs for some friendly and exciting competition? Getting competitive might just be what you need to find your people and place on campus.

There are many opportunities for you to get involved and find organizations that fit your interests. Here are a few if you love winning and competing.

Visit and play at The Connection

There are different ways to compete against fellow Buffs, especially if you’re into video games, table games and even board games!

The Connection is CU Boulder’s fun hub. Located on the first floor of the UMC, this hot spot is your go-to place for many competitive activities. Challenge your friends to trivia nights; bowling, pingpong and video game tournaments; and more. You can also check out board games from the front desk to feed your competitive spirit.

Compete with others through sports

Do you like to play sports for fun? Intramural (IM) sports are the perfect opportunity for you. IM sports give you the chance to get connected to campus, meet fellow Buffs and compete in a variety of sports and activities. IM sports are open to students, faculty and staff. You can create a team with friends or register as a free agent, no matter how you choose to play, there’s something for everyone. Purchase an IM Sports Pass to play in leagues and tournaments throughout the semester.

Win money with sustainable ideas

The Sustainable Solutions Challenge is a campus-wide competition to help move CU Boulder into a sustainable, carbon-neutral future. Compete individually or with a team to showcase your creative ideas. The best part about it—the winning proposal will be awarded $1,500, while a runner-up and an audience favorite will each be awarded $500.

The price money is funded by the CU Office of the President. Plus, your idea will be considered for implementation on the CU Boulder campus!

Apart from joining the competition, there will also be a showcase on April 21 where you can present your idea and be eligible to win a part of $25,000 in prize money from the MIssion Zero Fund at CU Boulder.

Find what’s interesting to you

Reach out to your professors and ask if there are any opportunities for you to compete in areas related to your major. No matter what your interests are, there will be something that is right for you.

It takes time finding your place, but BuffConnect can make it simple. BuffConnect is CU’s student club portal. There are more than 500 student organizations and the list is organized by category to help you find organizations or a club that matches your interests. Start by searching the groups in the recreation and wellness, social or sport club categories.

Attend events

As the old saying goes, “a little competition never hurt anyone.” Attending events is your chance to meet people that share your interests and try new things. Be on the lookout for activities you can be a part of to put your competitive skills to the test!

Try things on your own

If you’d like to create your own competitive games with your friends, here are a few suggestions to try to have a great time.

  • Set up a relay race with your buddies. Make a goal to run around Norlin Quad or Farrand Field and see who wins.

  • Play a board game—you can check one out from your residence hall community center or at The Connection.

  • Gather some friends and try an escape room.

  • Challenge a friend to a one-on-one game of HORSE.

  • Create a scavenger hunt.

  • Sign up for a biking or running race.
