Biography

Lori Hunter is Professor of Sociology and Faculty Research Associate in the Institute of
Behavioral Science’s Research Programs on Environment & Society, as well as Population. She is
Director of the CU Population Center which facilitates research on three signature
themes:  Migration, Health, and Population-Environment interactions.

Dr. Hunter’s research and teaching focus on human-environment interactions, with specific
examinations of migration and climate change connections, particularly in the context of natural
resource-dependent rural livelihoods across the globe. Hunter’s recent work has also examined
natural resource use as coping strategy among HIV/AIDS-impacted households in rural South Africa.

She has published over 50 peer-reviewed manuscripts and many book chapters on these topics and is
regularly invited to speak on climate-migration connections.  Dr. Hunter recently offered
commentary for the UN as the organization works to integrate population issues into the Sustainable
Development Agenda.  She’s also consulted with the World Bank on migration, climate and gender, and
her recent research on these topics has appeared in The Lancet, Global Environmental Change,
Environmental Research Letters, Annual Review of Sociology, Population Research and Policy Review,
Social Science Quarterly, and Society and Natural Resources.

Dr. Hunter is Editor-in-Chief of the academic journal Population and Environment, chair of a
Special Emphasis Panel on Migration, Climate and Health for the International Union for the
Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP), and past Chair of the Steering Committee of the
Population-Environment Research Network (PERN).
