Slow down, get a closer look, and discover the incredible world all around you! In this afterschool program, students will learn the fundamentals of nature journaling by combining observation, science, writing and art. Through guided journaling activities and creative prompts, we'll explore the hidden wonders of our microhabitats and nearby natural areas throughout Boulder. Off-campus field exploration days will be scheduled throughout the program (specific dates will be shared in a class schedule).
Whether you're sketching the details of a tiny insect, recording sound maps, or documenting a cool bird behavior, you'll build observation skills while developing your own unique journaling style. No prior art experience is required- just curiosity and a willingness to explore in the outdoors!
What to Bring: While at Science Discovery, participants are expected to store their personal belongings in their backpack. Space is limited so please limit the number of personal items brought from home. All items should be labeled with the participant’s first and last name in case an item is misplaced. Please send your child with the following each day:
- A backpack (sized to fit your child) for carrying personal items and any class materials they'll be bringing home
- Filled water bottle(s)
- 1-2 snacks (or more), depending on the child's needs
- A sack lunch that does not require refrigeration
- Closed-toed shoes
- A hair tie to hold back lengthy hair, if applicable
- All camps spend a portion of each day outside. Please send your child with clothing appropriate for the daily forecasted weather (jacket, sweatshirt, rain poncho, etc.)
