Devin Wayand
Religious Studies

Devin Wayand is a MA student in the Religious Studies program from Tampa, Florida. He graduated from Florida State University in 2022 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religion and English Literature. His undergraduate thesis focused on the intersection of Black liberation theology (chiefly through the work of James Cone), Critical Race Theory, and white evangelical Christians. By offering Black liberation theology as a novel framework through which white evangelical Christians can understand Critical Race Theory, his thesis argues, the rift between the two may be mended. Devin’s main areas of interest are contemporary religious philosophy, the interplay of religion and the social order (whether it be political, economic, etc.), religious violence, and religious responses to violence and harm (chiefly how religion operates as a mode of hope). At CU Boulder Devin intends to further his education in these areas in preparation for completing a PhD program in the future. In his spare time, Devin enjoys reading and listening to music as well as exploring the outdoors and spending time in nature.
