To date, the Liel group has investigated multiple aspects on induced earthquakes and their impact on infrastructure. Aspects of this completed research include how much the seismic hazard has increased, how the observed earthquakes events compare to the increased hazard predictions, how induced ground motions differ from natural ground motions in terms of structural response, efforts to construct a database of observed damage to structures from induced earthquakes, quantification of the onset of damage for light-frame wood homes in induced earthquakes, and the structural performance of light-frame wood homes subject to sequences of induced earthquakes. Current research is focused on how induced earthquake mitigation measures have the potential to reduce the liklihood of damage to light-frame wood buildings. Future research aims to evaluate the effectiveness of different mitigation techniques for reducing induced earthquakes.
