Directors Message

Dear colleagues and campus partners,

Summer is off to a strong and exciting start for the RES team. We’ve been steadily advancing several initiatives, and I wanted to take a moment to share a few updates that reflect the momentum and energy within our department.

I'm pleased to share that the university recently acquired two remarkable properties. One is a 15-acre parcel in Jefferson County with great potential to support CU’s future development efforts. The other is a 476-acre property in Boulder County that will be conserved in perpetuity, helping preserve our beautiful foothills habitat while creating meaningful research and educational opportunities for our faculty and students. These land donations are significant, and we’re grateful for the long-term benefits they bring to CU and our surrounding environment.

We also welcomed Adrian, our summer intern, to the team in May. Adrian has quickly become a valuable member of the office, bringing curiosity, professionalism, and a strong desire to learn more about the real estate field. We’re fortunate to have him with us during such an active season.

As always, I’m incredibly proud of the dedication and collaboration across our team. On behalf of everyone at RES, I hope you’re enjoying all that summer in Colorado has to offer. We look forward to seeing you around campus soon!

Current and Upcoming Building Projects

MSSC
Construction for gender-neutral restroom renovations for the west bank of restrooms has been delayed and is expected to commence in Early 2026.
RL2
Design for replacing air handlers and converting the lighting in hard ceiling areas to LED is planned to begin this fall. Renovations to create a large shared conference room  on the 3rd floor will begin soon.
SPSC
Construction for gender-neutral restrooms and exhaust fan replacement is expected to begin in August and be complete by Fall 2025. Lighting upgrades and carpet replacement in first-floor corridors are expected to be completed by September 2025.

GSA rescinds termination of USGS lease

In February, GSA, in accordance with DOGE directives, provided notice to RES that they are terminating the USGS lease at the MSSC effective 8/31/2025. USGS has been doing critical regional research at MSSC for over 30 years, and the decision to terminate the lease was made without their consultation. Therefore, USGS appealed the lease termination, and their lease was successfully reinstated in June.

RES Welcomes Adrian as our Summer Intern

My name is Adrian Karbowski, and I’m going into my senior year at Leeds studying Real Estate. I chose to go for this internship because I was interested in how the management of real estate worked in an organization as big and bureaucratic as CU. Looking at how institutions closer to government entities work with real estate really fascinated me.

My interest in real estate comes from how it affects everything and everyone in all aspects of life, and how changes in real estate can have impacts that echo far beyond itself. Through this internship, I look to gain practical experience as well as apply what I’ve learned through my education and give context to it in a professional environment.

Outside of school and work, I enjoy hiking, motorcycling, and cooking.

Volunteer Day of Service: Aug. 12

On Tuesday, August 12, staff from Infrastructure and Resilience (I&R), Finance and Business Services (FBS), and the Division of Public Safety (DPS) are invited (and encouraged) to come together and dedicate a few hours of service back to our campus community. Our goal for the day is to engage with and give back to our campus. All registrants will receive lunch and a CU Boulder-branded trucker hat.

Please consider joining us for a fun day of volunteering. Registration closes at 5:00 pm on Thursday, August 7—so sign up today. After you register, full details about where to go and what to bring for your job will be emailed to you no later than Friday, August 8.
