The University of Colorado Boulder was the latest target in a string of hoaxes directed at campuses around the country with false active-harmer reports. The CU Boulder Police Department (CUPD) has determined there was and is no threat to campus.
7/11/2025
The Boulder County Investigation Team (BCIT) has completed its investigation into the in-custody death of Jesus Lopez Barcenas, who was arrested by CU Boulder Police (CUPD) officers at the Center for Innovation and Creativity (CINC) building at 1777 Exposition Drive on Dec. 27, 2024. In a decision letter released by the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office, the two CUPD officers and one CUPD sergeant were cleared of any criminal charges.

CUPD and the entire CU Boulder community are saddened to share this update from the Boulder County Sheriff's Office on the results of their investigation into the February death of CU Boulder student Megan Trussell.

For the first time in nearly seven years, the CU Boulder Police Department is welcoming a new chief of police. Following a national search, Ashley Griffin will begin serving in the leadership role beginning on July 1. Griffin is expected to be sworn in this fall.

The CU Boulder Police Department is investigating an incident that occurred Wednesday, April 2 where a classroom was disrupted by unidentified individuals, one or more of whom were removed from the classroom after being told to leave repeatedly by the instructor.

The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office has notified CUPD that a deceased person matching the description of a missing CU Boulder student was discovered this morning near mile marker 40 in Boulder Canyon. CUPD is working to confirm additional details and will communicate those as soon as we are able. The Boulder County Coroner is responsible for identification and cause of death.

In the early morning hours of Nov. 1, several buildings on the CU Boulder campus were vandalized. The antisemitic messages contained in the vandalism violate the university’s policies on free expression and Campus Use of University Facilities, as well as Colorado law.

CU Boulder is aware that flyers were thrown off an interior balcony at Norlin Library on Friday, Dec. 13, at the same time that a “study in” was being held by the group Boulder Students for Justice in Palestine. The flyers called for an “immediate evacuation” of Norlin Library but also stated this was not a real evacuation notice, rather a simulation. Nonetheless, the fliers violated the university’s Campus Use of University Facilities policy on canvassing, and the CU Boulder Police Department is investigating in conjunction with the Division of Student Affairs.

As public servants dedicated to protecting human life, seeking the truth and pursuing justice under the law, we are sickened and disheartened by the actions of the five Memphis police officers and two fire medics involved in the death of Tyre Nichols after a traffic stop earlier this month.

In an eye-opening, interactive training, members of the University of Colorado Boulder police department, along with members of several regional police agencies, engaged in "What You Do Matters: Lessons from the Holocaust,” a course developed specifically for police in concert with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.
