Transforming Your Research into Teaching Workshop Series, June 4 - July 30, 2019
This is a 9-session workshop series designed to expose participants to the basic elements of course design. Over the course of this workshop, participants will design a course based on their Master’s or Ph.D. thesis topic or their area of post-doctoral research. The program will move slowly, one aspect of the course at a time, to allow participants to fully develop their ideas and not detract unnecessarily from their research goals. At the end of the workshop participants will present their course to the group and design a full course syllabus.
This course carries no CU credit but is a collaborative effort with the University of Iowa, Iowa State University, University of Nebraska, Indiana University and University of Colorado Boulder. All institutions are members of the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning (CIRTL) Network, a network of 38 institutions that seeks to enhance excellence in undergraduate education through the development of a national faculty committed to implementing and advancing evidence-based teaching practices for diverse learners.
Participants will be able to use this course towards their 20 discipline specific hours for their certification in college teaching or pursuing excellence in college teaching credential.
Course Organization:
This course is a hybrid asynchronous/synchronous online/face-to-face course.
1) Most of the primary content will be delivered online in the form of online videos and assignments for participants to work on by themselves. Participants can view the videos anytime during the week (asynchronous).
2) Each week, students will have the opportunity to convene as a local group to discuss what they have learned from the video materials, collaborate on their course design projects, and do advanced activities to get them into the content in a more personal way.
3) Participants are encouraged to share creative works-in-progress at four points during the workshop series. These works-in-progress will be submitted on a shared directory online where participants can browse their cross-network classmates’ projects for creative inspiration. There will be no mandatory comments on discussion boards in this class!
4) At the end of the class, students will have a completed course syllabus that captures all their work over the workshop series. As a network, we will meet online for our final class session and the favorite courses from each institution will be shared in a mock faculty meeting where participants can pitch their course concept to their peers!
