PSCI 4792 (3) ISSUES IN LATIN AMERICAN POLITICS
This course will focus on the nature of political systems in Latin America—dictatorship, democracy, and combinations thereof. What accounts for transitions from one system to another? How durable is contemporary democracy within the region? Blending history with political science, case studies will include Mexico, Cuba, Argentina, Chile, and Brazil.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Peter Smith has devoted his academic career to the study of Latin American history and politics, with special attention to recipes for change—revolutionary, reactionary, or reformist. He has conducted field research and taught courses throughout Latin America and in Europe, Japan, and China. He has received multiple teaching awards and is principal author of the course text, Democracy in Latin America.
