Supporting your student

Move-in

Classes started this week!
The transition to classes at CU Boulder can be difficult for many students. Some may be feeling homesick, unsure of how to succeed in class, or anxious about turning all of these strangers into new friends! Consider this as you’re talking with your student in the coming weeks. You can support them by reminding them of the on-campus resources available to them for just these reasons. Here are a few ideas you can suggest when they express negative feelings:

Succeeding in Classes

Students living in the residence halls have access to tutors at no cost to them. Suggest that your student access this early in the semester before they feel overwhelmed by their course load. Tutors are available for students not in the residence halls, too. All professors also offer office hours, which is a great opportunity for students to clarify points they may have found confusing in class.

Missing Home

After the excitement of moving to campus starts to wear off, it’s common for new students to start to miss home. You might consider setting up a regular communication schedule so there is a time each week you can connect on the phone. But why not also send a letter? Submit a letter through the link below before Aug. 29 (that’s Monday!) and we’ll deliver them!

Send your letter from home

Update: We're not accepting letters for delivery through our office, but why not still mail one? We have cute stationery at the link above and instructions to find your student's mailing address!

Staying Healthy

Between the Rec, intramural sports and miles of trails and outdoor space, there is no lack of opportunity to stay active. But did you know that students can also talk with a registered dietician on campus about their diet? And staying healthy mentally is just as important as physical health. Remind your student that they are eligible for six visit with a mental health counselor each year through CAPS.

Having Fun & Making Friends

College can be fun, too! And there are hundreds of student organizations on campus. Encourage your student to check out the Center for Student Involvement andintramural and club sports to find a few new activities to try. Joining student organizations is a great, low-pressure way for them to meet other CU students with similar interests.
