Talks for before move-in

Buff Family Newsletter

Welcome, Incoming Buff Families
Move-in is just around the corner and we look forward to having your student join the Buff family!  We know safety is an important topic as you and your student prepare for move-in. Your student recently received a Boulder Bound newsletter focused on safety. And, we wanted to share the same information with you, so that you can have these important conversations with your student before coming to campus. Following please find more information about available safety features and services available at CU Boulder.

Campus Bike Safety

Members of the CU Boulder community know the effects of bike theft, as it is the number one crime that occurs on campus each day. Bicycle theft has become a problem on college campuses around the country. Here are a few tips for your student to protect their bike. Tips to protect your bike

LifeLine Response App

There is an extra level of security for students as they walk, bike or jog on our beautiful campus. The CU Police Department provides it through LifeLine Enterprise Response. This free smartphone app will call 9-1-1 on your student's behalf if they encounter trouble. Find out more

Emergency Notifications

CU Boulder students are automatically signed up to receive email alerts about emergency events on campus, including campus closures, extreme weather and other emergencies. Students are encouraged to add their cellphone number, too–they will receive notifications faster, which can make a difference in emergency situations

Families can learn more about emergencies and campus closures by visiting colorado.edu. When there is an alert, a red box will appear at the top of the page with more information.

Safety Tips for Pedestrians

Boulder is a pedestrian friendly city, but it is still important to be aware. Most injuries occur as a result of the inattentiveness of motorists and the faiulre of pedestrians to use crosswalks, combined with failure to obey traffic signals. By taking basic precautions, the likelihood of a collision can be dramatically reduced. Learn about pedestrian safety

Talking About Sexual Assault
As part of a nationwide focus on sexual misconduct on college campuses, CU Boulder conducted a survey to better understand the prevalence of sexual misconduct on our campus. Phase II survey results were recently released and these important findings are being used to enhance campus prevention efforts and response resources. All incoming students are required to attend an in-person bystander training session to prepare them to respond to various high-risk situations so that they can help reduce harm in our community. Before your student arrives on campus, talk to them about the importance of looking out for each other and recognizing problematic behaviors. For instance, someone trying to isolate a person, someone acting aggressively, or someone pushing others' boundaries. Read a letter from the Chancellor to learn more about the key survey findings and better understand these critical issues.
