Pollution to production: student startup transforms CO2 into aerospace hardware

College of Engineering and Applied Science—Aerospace PhD student Spencer Dansereau aims to take carbon dioxide emissions from power plants and extract the carbon molecules to create 3D-printed carbon fiber, which can be used for everything from bicycles to aerospace components. In 2023, Mach Electric Aerospace took first place in CU Boulder’s Lab Venture Challenge business development competition and second place in the New Venture Challenge.

CU Boulder ranks among best colleges for future leaders

CU Boulder Today—CU Boulder has been ranked among the nation’s top public and private universities in Time Magazine’s Best Colleges for Future Leaders, less than five years after launching the Center for Leadership on campus. Ranked No. 64 in the analysis, which examined the alma maters of 2,000 of the most influential leaders in the U.S. from business, government, academia and culture, CU Boulder was the only Colorado school included on the list. The analysis weighted the relative number of leaders by the size of school.

Coloradan Alumni Magazine—According to the latest report from the Association of University Technology Managers, which assessed startup creation by universities in 2021, CU ranked fifth nationwide, ahead of Stanford and MIT. CU Boulder produced 20 startups that year and has spun out 179 companies to date. The pace of startup formation is surging, having nearly doubled in recent years.
