About This Organization
Organization Description:
The purpose of the Engineering for Developing Communities (EDC) Student Group is to provide a forum to share insights, perspectives and resources related to development-related topics and to advance the student experience of those pursuing coursework or research in this area at the University of Colorado Boulder. Although the focus of the group’s programming is to benefit masters and Ph.D students pursuing degrees and research within the Mortenson Center for Engineering in Developing Communities(College of Engineering & Applied Science), activities and events are open to all students, faculty and staff of the University. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of the group’s mission of advancing discourse around development, students from varied backgrounds and disciplines are encouraged to attend and participate in events.
Organization’s Principal Activities, Events, or Programs:
The group seeks to accomplish its mission through a series of lectures, guest speakers, film screenings, social events, professional & academic mixers as well as supporting students’ research, travel and development projects. All of this work underscores the groups main goal of knowledge sharing among students pursuing careers in international development engineering.
How this Organization’s activities benefit the University community:
By coordinating with students and faculty across departments & disciplines, the group will encourage interdisciplinary collaboration on discourse and research related to pressing development topics. Additionally, by connecting the academic, alumni and professional development communities in the greater Boulder and Denver areas the student group will provide opportunities for students professional and career advancement. Overall, the group’s activities seek to advance both the content of development research & curriculum and the student experience.
How this Organization fits into its purposes:
The group fits the purpose of Engineering, Graduate, International & Development because it focuses on the intersection of each of these topics and connects students, faculty and professionals who study and practice in the realm of international development engineering. By encouraging learning and collaboration between academia and real-world practitioners the group seeks to advance the discourse and state of knowledge around the pressing issues of the day in international development engineering.
How to get involved with this Organization:
The group will canvass all incoming graduate students to the Engineering for Developing Communities program and have open (informal) enrollment / membership for all students regardless of major, department or degree status. The group will also have an e-mail listserv, website and facebook page that will notify all students of meeting times, locations, events and topics. This will allow students to easily lookup and find information about how to get involved with the group and attend regular meetings and events.

Organization Description:
Our mission is to build a community that focuses on bringing awareness to issues of women in science and engineering. We invite scientists of both genders and different generations (graduate students, postdocs, professors and scientists outside of academia) to participate in exchanging their experiences, offering coaching or advice, and helping each other develop successful careers.
Organization’s Principal Activities, Events, or Programs:
1) Invite professional speakers. 2) Organize panel discussions. 3) Organize social events. 4) Maintain a blog. 5) Mentoring of middle/high school girls.
How this Organization’s activities benefit the University community:
1) Help CU Boulder STEM graduate students and postdocs become successful scientists aware of issues concerning women in STEM fields. 2) Improve representation of women in STEM fields.

Organization Description:
The purpose of this organization is to advocate and support graduate student concerns and their work within the University of Colorado Boulder community.
Organization’s Principal Activities, Events, or Programs:
UGGS hosts bi-weekly assembly meetings for graduate student department representatives, offers travel and group grants each semester, and organizes social events and professional development events to connect graduate students and supplement their graduate student training.
How this Organization’s activities benefit the University community:
Graduate students comprise a significant proportion of the CU Boulder community (~5000). Graduate students operate in unique roles on campus (e.g., they act as both students and instructors). As a result, graduate students have unique needs and are often put in vulnerable situations without resources. UGGS serves as the primary advocacy group for graduate students.
