I grew up in Colorado Springs and moved to Boulder as an undergraduate in 1985.  I earned my B.A. in CU’s Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology Department, and I later returned to CU to earn a Ph.D. from the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology.  I taught science in the Boulder Valley School District for over 30 years, retiring in 2023, and I am the former president of the teachers’ union, the Boulder Valley Education Association.  I am a former, two-term board member of Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains and former chair of the organization’s political action arm, the PPRM Action Fund.  I was also elected twice to the board of PERA, the Public Employees’ Retirement Association, and I currently serve as Senate President Steve Fenberg’s appointee to the Colorado General Assembly’s Pension Review Subcommittee.

My advice to students...

In all of my leadership rolls - as a classroom teacher, a union president, and an engaged advocate for education, reproductive health and justice, and retirement security - I've discovered that leading is not about me and my vision.  Instead, it's about engaging with stakeholders and facilitating conversations to find common ground and create a direction forward based on shared ideals.  It's about inviting and encouraging others to find their voices, to tap their own leadership capacity, and to work collectively and collaboratively to move things forward.
