Spencer is focused on how the mineralogy and petrology of actively serpentinizing rocks affects the potential for microbial habitability. She is particularly interested in low-temperature, late-stage mineral formation and its relationship with hydrogen gas production. Spencer hopes to use micro-computed tomography to further understand the interior petrologic structure of the Samail ophiolite cores.
