Overview of partnership expectations between participating departments and Green Labs
What Green Labs Core offers
- Management and maintenance of shared equipment resources in collaboration with departments, and training on equipment proper use.
- Help finding shared equipment on campus, including equipment managed by other groups.
- Assess whether nominated equipment should be integrated into the shared equipment program and equipment relocation.
- Coordination of replacement or repairs of malfunctioning equipment and identification of suitable vendors.
- Visits to labs of retiring or relocating professors to assess potential equipment that could be incorporated into the shared equipment program.
- Provide outreach to raise awareness across campus of the availability of shared equipment resources for faculty, students and staff.
- Opportunities for students to work as part-time student employees for CU Boulder Green Labs managing shared equipment in their home departments or beyond. This work could include training new users, creating documentation on proper use and maintenance of equipment, and collection/analysis of data on shared equipment usage.
What Green Labs Core doesn't offer
- Our program does not do on-demand whole-lab cleanups. We just don’t have the bandwidth or person-power to do this.
- We don’t have ongoing budget to pay for equipment repairs but are willing to look for and find possible resources to get equipment repaired.
- We do not have the resources to handle all outgoing property disposal and surplus submission from participating departments.
What we need from departments to make the program work
- Our program stipulates that any equipment managed by Green Labs is open to campus-wide use by faculty, students, and staff.
- We will attempt to find funding for equipment repairs, but we may require funding input from the department that hosts the equipment under an equitable cost-sharing model.
- Physical space to host equipment. This could range from a single spot on a lab bench to an entire room that houses multiple pieces of equipment.
- Cooperation from the departmental users regarding consistent logging of equipment usage - data needed to acquire future funding to sustain the program.
- Cooperation from users regarding tidiness of equipment and spaces, proper usage of equipment, and timely reporting of any issues or incidents. If something malfunctions during use, we simply ask users to let us know ASAP. Otherwise, the malfunction could result in further damage to equipment and pose a safety hazard to other users and the shared equipment coordinator. We reserve the right to restrict access of specific users who repeatedly fail to follow responsible use practices for equipment.
