In Fall 2017, Community Talks will focus on the theme of “Jewish Mysticisms.” In Spring 2018, we will turn to the topic of “Sefarad and Beyond,” followed by “Yiddish Menschlichkeit: Explorations of a Yiddish Speaking People” for the 2018-2019 academic year.

Jewish Mysticisms – Fall 2017

Launched with a lecture this past Spring on the Jews of Spain with our 2017 Sondra D. Bender Scholar, Professor Matthew Goldish, Community Talks will continue our exploration of “Jewish Mysticisms” through Fall 2017.

In October, we welcome Amy Milligan, Professor Amy Milligan as our 2017 Jim and Diane Shneer Fellow in Post-Holocaust American Judaism. Professor Milligan will give a colloquium on her current research, "Renewing Her Body: The Body as Ritual Feminist Text in the Jewish Renewal Movement, 1970-2015."

In November, the series will feature SHE: Third Biannual Embodied Judaism Symposium and Exhibit. SHE will focus on the Shekhinah, a feminine divine presence that has influenced Jews from the ancient world through Second and Third Wave feminism and into the transgendered and environmental concerns of the present day. The symposium will feature presentations by community leader and author Rabbi Dr. Tirzah Firestone, scholars Professor Joy Ladin and Professor Samuel Boyd, and a never before seen performance from internationally acclaimed dancer and choreographer Robert Sher-Machherndl.

In December, we’ll host a Jewish Mysticism Working Group Round Table, featuring a discussion with Dr. David Sanders, Founder and Executive Director of the Denver-based Kabbalah Experience, and scholars Professor Sarah Pessin, Professor Zvi Ish-Shalom, and Professor Nan Goodman. The Round Table will bring together scholars, students, and community members for an in-depth, academic exploration of contemporary Jewish mysticisms.

Sefarad and Beyond – Spring 2018

In Spring 2018, Community Talks will take up a new theme – “Sefarad and Beyond.”

In February, the series will feature an evening with the celebrated author and journalist, Ariel Sabar, "Paradise Lost and Found." Sabar is a winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for his novel, My Father’s Paradise: A Son’s Search for his Jewish Past in Kurdish Iraq.

In March, we welcome celebrated scholar Aviva Ben-Ur, Professor of Judaic and Near Eastern Studies at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, for a public lecture titled, "Jewish Autonomy in a Slave Society: The Eurafrican Jews of Suriname, South Africa."

In April, we are pleased to feature the Program in Jewish Studies’ 2018 Sondra and Howard Bender Visiting Scholar.
