Join us as we kickoff the weeklong 2024 Sustainability Hackathon competition on Thursday, Oct. 17!

What is the Hackathon?
The Hackathon provides the opportunity for CU Boulder students, faculty and staff to “hack” some of the sustainability issues our society is facing and develop a solution (with or without technology). The key is coming together with others who are passionate about solving problems, teaming up on an idea, and having fun in the process of building something to impact the world. Thousands of dollars in prize money will be awarded!

CU Boulder Today – A research team led by the University of Colorado Boulder Professor of Physics Ivan Smalyukh, was awarded by the Guinness Book of World Records for developing “the World’s Most Transparent Material.”

The ATLAS Institute – Laura Devendorf, assistant professor at the ATLAS Institute and Information Science, was awarded a U.S. National Science Foundation grant of $297,630 for phase one of a larger project focusing on weaving and engineering entitled, “Cultivating an Ecosystem for Interdisciplinary Smart Textiles Research.”

CU Boulder Today – Colleagues from the CU system office and CU Boulder have been selected to take part in the inaugural Scalable Tech Track Adopters cohort this fall, a program through the partnership of Wells Fargo’s Innovation Incubator (IN2) and the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL).

Venture Partners at CU Boulder – Companies at the Rocky Mountain Life Sciences Investor and Partnering Conference on September 12 and 13 represent the future of life-saving health innovation from the Rocky Mountain West. They will pitch to angel investors, venture capitalists and strategic partners from major financial hubs.

Deming Center for Entrepreneurship – Marc Herzberger’s entrepreneurial story is one of passion and relentless grit. He has been pivotal in transforming Hype from a fledgling company into a dynamic force in the footwear market. His complete rebranding effort was crucial for Hype, especially after their appearance on Shark Tank, which significantly boosted their visibility and growth.

LASP – Nicholas Kruczek, an instrument engineer in the solar and stellar science division at the Laboratory for Atmospheric Space Physics (LASP), has been named a recipient of the 2023 NASA Nancy Grace Roman Technology Fellowship in Astrophysics, as an early career researcher with innovative ideas to advance astrophysics flight programs and technology.

CU Boulder Today – The two-week long process of a python devouring its massive prey was described by CU Boulder researchers this week in the journal PNAS, could ultimately inspire novel treatments for a common human heart condition called cardiac fibrosis as well as a host of other modern-day ailments that the monstrous snakes seem to miraculously resist.
