Students invent device for delivering COVID-19 vaccines to rural areas

CU Engineering students have invented PortaVax, a portable vaccine carrier that can keep up to 250 vaccine doses cold for several days using insulation and dry ice. Their device will help solve transporting vaccine doses to rural communities, which often lack reliable electricity or cannot afford ultra-low temperature coolers.

CU Boulder spinout ColdQuanta, the leader in Cold Atom Quantum Technology, has been awarded two development contracts from U.S. Government agencies worth $2.55M in total. Both projects are based on the company's Quantum Core™ technology that uses atoms cooled to a temperature of nearly absolute zero, and lasers to manipulate and control the atoms with extreme precision.

New online network connects and supports Colorado’s rural entrepreneurs

When their business needed help during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, EsoTerra Cider founders Elizabeth Philbrick and Jared Scott put out a call for help on an online tool for small business owners called the Startup Colorado Network. The network was launched in 2020 by Startup Colorado, an outreach program within Silicon Flatirons at CU Boulder. It connects rural entrepreneurs with business resources, as well as fellow business owners, mentors and funders.

More than 60 out of 110 registered NVC teams chose to participate in one of the three competitions: Impact Prize, NVC Newcomer Prize and Female Founder Prize. With inspiring and energetic programming, the Specialty Prize Nights gave attendees a preview of the startups who will be competing in the official NVC competition. The winners represented all corners of campus, ranging from the Leeds School of Business to the College of Music, to freshmen, graduate students, PhDs and faculty.

Alumnus’ startup harnesses blockchain for secure, trustworthy PPE purchasing

At a time when companies struggled to locate masks and other PPE at affordable prices in a highly stressed supply chain, CU alumnus Russ Decker (CompSci’18) and co-founder Jake Deichmann decided to use their technology skills to help. Since they founded PPE Exchange in June 2020, their blockchain system has helped companies secure roughly 36 million units of PPE and transfer $48 million in payments.

TissueForm seeks to improve quality-of-life outcomes at lower costs for patients suffering from tissue disease, damage, or aging through stem cell and matrix-based therapies. The company—founded by Jeanne Barthold, PhD, and CU Boulder Mechanical Engineering Associate Professor Corey Neu—is no stranger to the pitch competition circuit. TissueForm won $125,000 in Venture Partners' 2018 Lab Venture Challenge and took home multiple awards and more than $20,000 in CU Boulder's New Venture Challenge 11.
