New research published in the journal Nature reveals that bacteria and people share the same core machinery for fighting off viruses and sheds light on how that ancient machinery works. The discovery could pave the way to novel approaches for treating human diseases, much like the gene-editing tool CRISPR—which was also modeled after a weapon bacteria used to fight viruses—has.
