Five ways to find startup jobs

The startup job and internship search often looks a bit different than looking for roles at bigger companies. Startups may not have job pages on their websites, contact information may be difficult to find, and jobs/internships may not get posted on a regular basis like you’ll see with bigger corporations and organizations.

Check out these tips for finding startup jobs and internships more easily:

  1. Come to Startups2Students: CU Boulder hosts Startups2Students multiple times a year to connect students with fresh startup jobs. Startups pitch themselves to students and then have the chance to network afterwards. Our next events are in January and April. You’ll be able to find them on Handshake soon.

  2. Network: It seem intimidating, but networking is really just meeting people and making meaningful connections. It is an essential skill in the startup world and great way to find a job or internship. Consider the many events hosted on campus through the CU Boulder Innovation & Entrepreneurship Initiative and campus partners as a starting point. You never know who you’ll meet at New Venture Challenge events or community events like the many listed on the Colorado Startups website.

  3. Find Roles on Handshake: Check out this article for how to easily find jobs and internships posted by local startups on Handshake. Positions and companies are updated regularly with roles in just about every field. Save your search to make it easier to stay in touch with the newest positions available.

  4. Search On Public Job Boards: While it may be a bit more competitive, you can also find startup roles on online job boards and forums. Consider websites like BuiltIn Colorado, the slack and LinkedIn groups for Colorado Startups, or LinkedIn where you can follow startups you like and see when new jobs get posted.

  5. Reach Out: Do you have a startup or two in mind that you really like and can see as a future workplace? Check out their website and look for a contact page or reach out to an employee on LinkedIn. Start with a soft introduction of yourself and why this company appeals for you. Then ask if they happen to have any open positions now or in the near future for you to consider. Startups love a proactive student!

Of course there are other ways to find positions with startups. If you’re not finding success with the options above, check in with Career Services for some more tips and tricks on your job or internship search!
