Core Course Requirements
The required core courses represent a minimum of 12 units, including prerequisites. Every student must complete the below courses earning a grade of B or better.
- Introduction to Cognitive Psychology: PSYC 2145-3
- Prerequisites: PSYC 1001-3
- Introduction to Cognitive Science: PSYC 3005, cross-listed as CSCI 3702, LING 3005, PHIL 3310, SLHS 3003, and INFO 3702
- Recommended Prerequisites: Two of the following, CSCI 1300, LING 2000, and/or PSYC 2145
- Recommended Prerequisites: Two of the following, CSCI 1300, LING 2000, and/or PSYC 2145
Advanced Skills Course Requirements
Two of the following seven advanced skills course sequences, one of which may be in the area of your major. Courses must be completed with a grade of B or better.
- ATLS 4112-001, Neurohacking – Dr. Annie Margaret Prerequisite: ATLS 2000 (minimum grade C)
- ATLS 4519-080 section only, Advanced Special Topics in Brain-Body Music Interfaces – Dr. Grace Leslie Prerequisite: ATLS 2000 (minimum grade C)
Taking classes in the Computer Science focus area would require a minimum of 6 units and an additional minimum of 4 units for prerequisites.
Two of the following courses in Computer Science:
- CSCI 3002-3, Human-Centered Computing Foundations
Prerequisites: CSCI 2270 - CSCI 3202-3, Artificial Intelligence
Prerequisites: CSCI 2270, Discrete Math and Probability/Statistics - CSCI 4830-3, Special Topics: Learning and Collaboration
Prerequisite: CSCI 2400 typically, but varies by topic and instructor. Refer to class schedule for prerequisites.
- INFO 3502 (3): Online Communities, counts as Investigations in Information Science.
- INFO 3505 (3): Designing for Creativity and Learning, counts as Investigations in Information Science.
- INFO 3508 (3): Personal Information Management, counts as Investigations in Information Science.
- INFO 4601 (3): Ethical and Policy Dimensions of Information and Technology, counts as Mastery in Information Science.
- INFO 4602 (3): Information Visualization, programming knowledge is strongly encouraged. Counts as Mastery in Information Science.
- INFO 4603 (3): Survey Research Design, counts as Mastery in Information Science.
- INFO 4604 (3): Applied Machine Learning, counts as Mastery in Information Science.
- INFO 4605 (3): Ethnographic Research in Applied Settings, counts as Mastery in Information Science. Degree credit not granted for INFO 4605 and INFO 5605.
- INFO 4609 (3): User-Centered Design, counts as Mastery in Information Science.
- INFO 4611 (3): Ubiquitous Computing Experience Design, counts as Mastery in Information Science.
Taking classes in the Linguistics focus area would require a minimum of 6 units, and an additional minimum of 3 units for prerequisites.

Taking classes in the Philosophy focus area would require a minimum of 6 units, and an additional minimum of 3 units for prerequisites.
Two of the following six courses in Philosophy:
- PHIL 3170-3, Philosophy and Ethics of Artificial Intelligence
Prerequisites: 27-180 credits (Sophomores, Juniors or Seniors) only - PHIL 4300-3, Philosophy of Mind
Prerequisites: PHIL 2440-3, 3010-3, 3340-3, 3480-3 - PHIL 4340-3, Epistemology
Prerequisites: 12 hrs PHIL inc 2440-3 & 3010-3 - PHIL 4400-3, Philosophy of Science
Prerequisites: 12 hrs PHIL including 2440-3, junior standing - PHIL 4460-3, Modal Logic
- PHIL 4480, Formal Methods in Philosophy

Taking classes in the Psychology and Neuroscience focus area would require a minimum of 7 units, and an additional minimum of 4 units for prerequisites.
- NRSC 4032-3, Neurobiology of Learning and Memory
Prerequisites: NRSC 2100 or (NRSC 2125 and NRSC 2150) - PSYC 4145-4, Cognitive Psychology
Prerequisites: PSYC 1001-3, PSYC 2111-4 and PSYC 3111-4 - PSYC 4155, Cognitive Neuroscience/Neuropsychology
Prerequisites: PSYC 2111-4, PSYC 2145-3, PSYC 3111-4, and either PSYC 2012-3 or NRSC 2100-4 or (NRSC 2125-4 and NRSC 2150-4) - PSYC 4165-4, Psychology of Perception
Prerequisites: PSYC 1001-3, PSYC 2111-4, PSYC 3111-4 - PSYC 4220, Language & Mind
- PSYC 4560-3 Language development
Equivalent : Duplicate Degree Credit Not Granted: LING 4560 and SLHS 4560
Requisites: Restricted to Psychology (PSYC) or Neuroscience (NRSC) majors only.
Taking classes in the Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences focus area would require a minimum of 6 units, and an additional 3 units for prerequisites.
SLHS 2010-3, Science of Human Communication AND one of the following four courses in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences (SLHS):
- SLHS 3006-3, Phonetics (if Linguistics 3100-3 is unavailable)
- SLHS 3106-3, Hearing Science
- SLHS 3116-3, Speech Science
- SLHS 4502-3, Language Disorders, Child and Adult
Prerequisite: SLHS 4560-3 - SLHS 4560-3, Language Development
Prerequisites: PSYC 1001-3, LING 2000-3
Additional Requirements
- Students must earn a grade of B or better for all courses that apply to the ICS undergraduate certificate.
- 15 of the units must be in upper-division courses.
- Additional credit hours may be required as prerequisites to classes chosen to fulfill the Undergraduate Certificate Plan of Study, but these courses usually also fulfill degree requirements.
- Any proposals for substitute courses must be pre-approved by the ICS Academic Director.
- For transfer students: Up to two courses already successfully transferred to CU from another institution may apply to the certificate requirements with approval of the ICS Academic Director.
