An important goal of the CU REACH center is to support interdisciplinary science aimed at understanding the intersection of cannabis with health and public policy. Partnering with the Center for the Integrative Study of Work (CISW), CU REACH is announcing the Interdisciplinary Research Scholar Award. This award is intended to provide outstanding pre-doctoral students with financial support to assist in the process of completing an independent one-year research project in the areas of genetics, plant genomics, toxicology, biobehavioral, pre-clinical, or human research studies that focus on the intersection of cannabis and health. We are particularly interested in funding, but not limited to, interdisciplinary research projects with potential to contribute to the knowledge base of biological and cognitive processes related to cannabis that impact health, behavior, and academic and occupational functioning.
Funds are available up to $3,000 per award and you must provide a budget that fully justifies the requested amount.
Eligibility.
- An eligible applicant must be a pre-doctoral student at CU Boulder.
- Be pursuing an innovative cannabis research project on an important topic with strong potential to break new ground in cannabis science and/or to impact policy. Successful applications will exhibit one or more of the following foci:
- An engagement with the implications of cannabis research in post-industrial society
- A focus on the process(es) by which cannabis impacts or moves through systems, from molecular and cellular through organismal or populations
- Development or application of innovative and interdisciplinary approaches towards cannabis research.
Selection Criteria. Up to three REACH Selection Committee members (not directly involved in any of the research proposals) will blind review and score the applications based on the following criteria:
- The significance, quality, and overall impact of the research project;
- The quality of the mentoring environment;
- The quality of the candidate's academic and research record (CV, conference presentations, publications, awards, etc.);
- The probability of completion within the year-long award period;
Application Procedures. Applicants are required to submit the following information in a single PDF document:
- Applicant's Curriculum Vitae.
- Synopsis of the research project (max three pages): include a brief description of the applicant’s training and background, an overview of the significance of the project, and a description of the aims and methods. References cited will not be included in the page limit.
- A timeline for completion of the project (max one page).
- A budget outline and justification for the requested funds (max one page).
- Name, title, and contact information (email address and phone number) for one mentor who will be providing a letter of support. REACH will initiate contact with the mentor with submission instructions.
- Documents should be Times New Roman font, 12pt, single-spaced, no less than 1/2" margins. Each application component should be a separate page.
All above documents must be uploaded in a single PDF document, in the above order, and be clearly designated.
- Letter of mentor support: statement of evaluation of the candidate and research project, a description of the mentoring and research environment, and the likelihood of completion within the year-long award period (max two pages) upon your submission of the application. REACH will provide letter submission instructions directly to mentor. Letters must be uploaded by February 1st.
