GPSG Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee Statement of Support for the Latinx Law Students Association (LLSA) Chapter at CU Law

The Graduate and Professional Student Government stands in solidarity with the Latinx Law Students Association (LLSA) Chapter at CU Law.

LLSA celebrated its second annual Dia de los Muertos event in the Wolf Law Building on Tuesday, November 1st. The event continued on Wednesday, November 2nd for a breakfast and sealing of the traditional ofrenda. On Thursday, November 3rd, Deans at CU Law removed the ofrenda without permission from LLSA executive board members.

The ofrenda needed to be taken down ceremoniously to follow tradition and demonstrate respect for the passed loved ones of the CU Law Community, the Colorado Legal Community, and the general Colorado community as a whole. Unfortunately, it was unceremoniously removed despite the pleas of LLSA executives.

This act was harmful, disrespectful, and shocking to all who not only participated in the event but those who share the sentiment of grief and loss. GPSG supports and affirms LLSA, the Latinx community, and all others affected as they process the tragedy of last week’s actions.

GPSG recognizes that commemorating these events as student organizations, rather than individuals, engenders bonds within groups and enhances the student experience.

We call on all of CU Boulder to be respectful, thoughtful, inclusive, and affirming of the growing Chicanx and Latinx community that contributes so much to the university's research, campus, and culture.

Sincerely,

Graduate and Professional Student Government

GPSG Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee
