The Innovation for Resilient Infrastructure (IRI) Research Group seeks to enhance the condition and resilience of infrastructure systems by developing data-driven, risk-based, and cost-effective methodologies to optimize decision-making in the management of infrastructure.

Cristina Torres-Machi, Ph.D.

Cristina Torres-Machi leads the IRI “Innovation for Resilient Infrastructure” research group at the University of Colorado Boulder. Cristina is an Assistant Professor of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering. She earned her undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering and a Masters degree in “Planning and Management in Civil Engineering” from the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain. Cristina obtained a dual Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain and the Catholic University of Chile. After obtaining her Ph.D. degree, Cristina worked as a Research Associate at the Centre for Pavement and Transportation Technology at the University of Waterloo, Canada. Cristina joined the University of Colorado Boulder as a faculty member in 2017.

Cristina has more than 10 years of experience working on advancing the current management of infrastructure assets, with a focus on pavements. Her research activities in this field include deterioration modelling, optimization, and decision-making systems to incorporate long-term analysis in transportation asset management. She has authored more than 60 publications including journal articles, book chapters, and conference proceedings and her work has received more than 250 citations. She has participated in successful projects funded by public and private agencies for the measurement and prediction of pavement performance, the multi-objective optimization of maintenance programs, and the development and implementation of pavement management systems. Different organizations including universities and the private sector have recognized her research contributions. Cristina received the Abertis International Award on Transportation Research (2016) and the award for PhD dissertation excellence by the Catholic University of Chile (2015) and the Polytechnic University of Valencia (2017).

Cristina serves as Vice-Chair of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) committee on Transportation Asset Management (AJE30). She is also an active member of the TRB committee on Pavement Management Systems (AKT10) and the ASCE Infrastructure Systems Committee.
