Dear Addie: I need a new hobby. Do you have any ideas?

Dear Addie, I thought this might be a good time to pick up a new hobby that I can do from home. Do you have any ideas on things I can try? – Hobby Henry

Dear Henry, I’ve heard the buzzword ‘hobby’ thrown around a lot lately…and you’re right, now is a great time to learn a new skill, try something new or develop a fun hobby. As for where to start? Think about something you’ve always wanted to try, like becoming fluent in another language or starting a podcast on a topic you’re passionate about. Just dive right on in using the internet, apps, or books as a resource. The app Duolingo is great for learning a new language and the app Anchor is an app to easily create a podcast. The possibilities are endless.

If you are unsure of where to start or don’t have a hobby in mind, check out Pinterest for some ideas of activities you can do at home. After all, Pinterest is the hub for finding any recipe or DIY craft you can imagine. The running joke of this quarantine is that if you haven’t made banana bread yet, what have you been doing? Try getting a bit more creative and whip up a recipe you’ve never made before.

If you’re looking to do something productive that could benefit you and others, try creating your own mask! YouTube has great tutorials you can watch that will walk you through how to create a mask using materials you already have at home. If you become a master mask maker that I know you can become, you can think about donating them to essential campus workers, or perhaps you could even open an Etsy shop to sell masks, or simply give them away to friends and family.

Off the top of my head some other hobbies you could get into could be writing or journaling, photography, gardening, learning an instrument, organizing, knitting, or even video games. Hobbies don’t have to be conventional. Think outside of the box and just hone in on something you are passionate about.

Happy hobby hunting!
