Ways to stay motivated in a remote learning environment
Staying motivated when you have the option to just curl up at home with a comfy blanket can be really tough. Getting yourself into a good routine similar to the one you had on campus is a great way to manage this new learning environment. Here are a few tips that have helped me stay motivated through this difficult time.
I find that setting my alarm to wake up at a reasonable time has allowed me to get a productive start to my day. I even make my bed so I’m not tempted to get back into it and I tidy up my room. These two simple things help me feel motivated and ready to go at an early time. I’ve also found that getting myself ready for the day helps me feel put together and gives me a sense of normalcy, so I suggest getting dressed instead of spending the entire day in your pajamas.
I also suggest keeping your school work and study space separate from where you sleep and relax. Try a desk or kitchen counter and make an effort to always take your classes and study there. This will keep your brain in the same routine and will help keep you more focused when you need to be.
With all our extra free time and easy access to the snack cupboard and refrigerator, it can be tempting to just snack all day. It’s important to keep a regular eating schedule so you aren’t constantly eating. Too many snacks will make you feel groggy and sluggish. Remember to also drink water throughout the day. This will help keep you hydrated and focused.
My last tip is to take buffer breaks in between studying to get your blood flowing so that you can refocus. Without being able to walk outside in between classes, we forget about those minutes we spend outdoors. Take those moments in between lectures to step out on your patio or walk a flight of stairs. This not only helps with circulation, but the movement will keep you awake. CU’s Rec Center also offers free stretching breaks, meditations and fitness classes online. Many are pre-recorded, while others will take place live and new classes are added each week.
These simple tips can help you stay focused throughout the day. After a few days of trying out these steps, you will develop a new routine and you’ll be surprised just how much better you will feel.
