Food you can make in the microwave
Cooking is a hard skill to learn, especially as a college student because you may not have access to the regular kitchen appliances needed to whip up a tasty meal. Thankfully, we have you covered with a quick and easy guide to foods you can make in the microwave if you are short on space, time or just want to try something new. Take our word for it, no stove or oven required.
Egg-cellent Breakfast
While there are many on-the go breakfast items like granola bars or fruit, there’s nothing quite like a warm breakfast to start off the day. This microwaved creation will definitely become a staple to your weekly routine.
To begin, start by gathering your ingredients and supplies. You’ll need a coffee mug, egg whites, cooking spray or butter, bell pepper, avocado, cheese or any other of your favorite egg scramble toppings. You’ll simply grease your mug with butter or spray and add your desired egg white amount. Sprinkle some salt and pepper on them and microwave on high for 50 seconds. Stir, add your toppings, then stir again. Microwave on high for 40 more seconds. In no time you’ll have a delicious dish that can be newly customized every time you make it.
Mac and Cheese
Everybody loves a good mac and cheese. The more cheese the better, am I right? To take your typical boxed mac and cheese up a notch though, consider making your own in the comfort of a microwave! Not only will it be more creamy and delicious, but you can have the satisfaction of knowing you made it from scratch. A win-win!
Start by pouring your desired amount of macaroni noodles into a microwave safe bowl and adding just enough water to cover the noodles. Next add a pinch of salt for some flavor. Place it in the microwave for 2 minutes. If it starts to foam over the bowl, take it out and stir it. Repeat this process for around 4-6 minutes until the noodles are tender.
Next comes the fun part, the cheesy goodness. Add around ¼ c. milk and a handful of cheese onto your cooked noodles. Stir the mixture together and then microwave for 30 seconds. Stir once again and repeat for another 30 seconds. In no time you’ll have a delicious mac and cheese to enjoy! To spice it up a bit, consider adding in some veggies or Sriracha sauce.
Southwest Snack
If you are looking for a healthy and balanced snack, look no further than this southwestern microwavable dish. In a microwave safe bowl, add one cup of rice and cover with water. Place a small scoop of butter on top and microwave for 12 minutes. Fluff with a fork and stir in some salsa, black beans and avocado.
Microwave Nachos
Nachos are a classic microwavable treat that are easy and delicious; perfect for a quick study break! Simply spread some chips on a large plate and top with your favorite nacho ingredients. We suggest cheese, beans, salsa, green chilies and cheese. Oh wait, did we already say that? Microwave on high for 1 ½ minutes or until the cheese is melted. Add sour cream or guacamole as a garnish.
Brownie in a mug
Have you ever been up late studying only to start craving a sweet treat, but don’t want to spend the time baking something? We’ve all been there. Thankfully there are countless mug recipes that will satisfy that craving, including this microwaveable brownie.
Like any classic brownie recipe, start by stirring together the dry ingredients into your microwaveable safe mug, ¼ c. flour, ¼ c. sugar, 2 tbsp. cocoa, pinch of salt and a pinch of cinnamon. Next, add the wet ingredients including ¼ c. water, 2 tbsp. canola oil, vegetable oil or melted butter and 1/8 teaspoon vanilla extract and stir until everything is smooth with no lumps. Microwave on high for 1 minute and 40 seconds. We suggest checking after 1 minute to see if it is to your desired consistency. You can thank us later when this becomes your new favorite dessert!
