Start out your semester strong with these 3 tips
It’s a new year, it’s a new semester and you’re going to crush it! Here are some tips to help you start out strong.
Read your syllabi
What does this one little document have to do with having a great semester? Your syllabus is where you’ll find everything you need to know to succeed in class. This includes expectations, required readings, project deadlines, exam dates, policies and more.
During your first week of the semester, take time to review the syllabus for each of your classes:
- Take note of important dates and deadlines.
- Become familiar with your instructor’s expectations and policies.
- Check the final exam date. If you have three or more finals on the same date, work with your instructors to get this adjusted by March 20.
- If you have any questions after reading the syllabus, ask you instructor for clarification as soon as possible.
Plan your studying
Most of us know that studying regularly can help us avoid all-nighters and last minute cramming later on. But sometimes it’s hard to know where to start, or be consistent with how often we study. One strategy that can help you stay on track this semester is using a calendar or planner.
Begin by scheduling out time each week to study. Block off time for each class to review your notes, work on assignments or catch up on reading. If you tend to get easily distracted, try out this study method:
- Set a timer for 25 minutes. Put your phone away and eliminate as many distractions as possible.
- Focus on one task or read until the timer goes off.
- Set your timer for 5 minutes and do whatever you’d like during this time. Check your phone, get a snack, dance like no one’s watching – whatever gives your brain a break!
- Reset your timer for 25 minutes and repeat.
With your trusty calendar or planner, you can also take note of important dates like exams, labs, project or paper deadlines, presentations and more. If you know you will have large papers or projects to complete, break these down into smaller tasks (with deadlines!) to work on throughout the semester.
