Tips from academic coaches
During this time of year, it is easy to fall into a slump academically. With finals just around the corner, though, it’s important to stay on top of your school work in order to finish the semester strong. We asked academic coaches to provide their expertise about staying motivated, preparing for finals and self-care. Consider adopting a few of their tips below into your routine as you approach the end of the semester.
Staying motivated
Visualize your ideal outcome. By understanding where you want to be, you can do the work needed to get there. Try setting small, achievable goals to reach the bigger outcomes.
Seek support from loved ones. Your friends and relatives can be great resources to talk to about your goals. They can keep you accountable and provide support.
Keep a progress journal. Journaling allows you to look back on how far you’ve come. Each day, write down what you want to accomplish and revisit it at the end of the day. Look at what you completed to determine what worked well and what didn’t. This activity will help understand the areas of your life that may need more attention.
Finals preparation
There’s more to learning than grades. When you are in class, work hard to gain a deeper understanding of topics and focus on mastering new skills. The grades will come if you focus on retaining information rather than trying to cram the night before an exam.
Visit professors’ office hours. Your professor has office hours for you! Utilize them. Talk with your professor about areas you may be struggling in and ask for study tips on upcoming tests.
Review materials regularly. Block some time on your schedule each day to go over class concepts. The more you expose yourself to class materials, the more likely you will remember them when it comes time for the final.
Self-care
Prioritize sleep. A good quality night’s sleep is one of the most important ways to achieving success. It will help you stay more energized, productive and open-minded.
Eat consistent meals. Staying well-nourished plays a vital role in your physical and mental health. Food is fuel, so be sure you are eating a balanced diet filled with nutritious options.
Seek professional help and support to address physical or mental health concerns. There are many resources on campus that can help support your physical and mental health.
