Congratulations to the 2018 ENVD Design Competition winners!

Thank you to ENVD students for voting for their favorite design and to the students who submitted their work!

1st place winner: Conner Kramer, ENVD Sophomore

Conner Kramer's submission, Buffalo with graphics insideThe design I submitted highlights each of the four ENVD disciplines. I brought all of these disciplines together using our school mascot, the buffalo. Unifying the designs was an important part of the design because I felt that all four have a lot and common and can't work without one another. The buffalo bringing the different disciplines together shows how they are all brought together by our school. I also added a slight paint overlay to highlight the time and effort ENVD students put into handcrafted work.

Conner is the winner of $500, and his submission will be hung on the wall across from ENVD 102 for the remainder of the 2018 - 2019 academic year.

2nd place winner: Joey Sandoval, ENVD Senior

"Color Theory" graphic submitted by Joey SandovalThe piece "ENVD Color Theory" attempts to convey the visual affinity behind ENVD's four design disciplines. Each panel is crafted to reflect the underlying emotional response and semblance guiding their practice. These digital manipulations transform familiar forms into stimulating compositions that verge on abstraction.

Joey SandovalJoey is a 4th-year architecture student with a fierce passion for innovation and design. His studies seek to explore the vast complexities of urban environments and the human emotions and cultural behaviors that come with it.

3rd place winner: Cody Thurston, ENVD Senior

Graphic representations of ENVD specializations For this project, I took a break from my 3D focus and made these graphics in illustrator. For each panel, I tried to capture a recognizable theme from each discipline. For architecture that was the design and build of houses. Planning was concerned with design of cities, while landscape focuses more on botanical elements. The last panel for design studies attempted to capture the idea of computer-aided design. While this is not representative of everyone’s experience in ENVD, I thought each design was simple, recognizable, and cleverly used the letters of the program acronym.

Portrait of Cody ThursstonCody is a Colorado native, and came to the Program in Environmental Design to explore Design Studies. His experiments have led him mostly towards smaller scale computer-aided design. As a 3D designer, combining his digital work with his fabrication background was a great bridge for him to use tools like the 3D printer and CNC mill.

Honorable Mention: Meghan O'Malley, ENVD Sophomore

Line drawings of ENVD specializations

The design reflects each of the disciplines within ENVD. Each discipline received their own panel which captures the essence of the specialization. The design is simplistic and focuses on lines. There is a main line within each panel to show fluidity.
