The University of Colorado Boulder encourages laboratories using lasers to follow the recommendations in the most current American National Standard for Safe Use of Lasers (ANSI Z136.1-2007). Copies of the ANSI standard are available at the Engineering Library on campus (the Library restricts use to University affiliates with a 3 day check-out time — ask for the Standard at the Information Desk).

A Laser Safety Handbook is available for CU Boulder laser users. This Environmental Health & Safety guideline documentation is intended for researchers and laboratory personnel, particularly those using Class 3B and 4 lasers on campus. The Laser Safety Handbook summarizes guidelines for the use of Class 3b and 4 lasers from the American National Standard (ANSI Z136.1) for the safe use of lasers.

Online Laser Training through BioRAFT

Laser Safety signs and protective goggles/equipment are the responsibility of the laboratory using a Class 3B or 4 laser. These items may be purchased from several vendors, including Laservision and Laser Institute of America.

Laser Registration

The CU Radiation Safety Office collects information on Class 3b and 4 lasers used on campus. If a class 3b or 4 laser is used as part of your research here at CU, please complete the online Laser Registration Form.
