Kristen Carpenter Named University of Colorado Distinguished Professor

The Center for Native American and Indigenous Studies (CNAIS) proudly celebrates Kristen Carpenter, Council Tree Professor of Law and Director of the American Indian Law Program at Colorado Law, on being named a University of Colorado Distinguished Professor—the highest honor conferred across the four-campus CU system. A globally recognized scholar and advocate, Professor Carpenter’s work in property, cultural heritage, human rights, and Indigenous Peoples’ law has transformed both theory and practice. Her leadership has advanced protections for sacred sites, strengthened international and federal policy frameworks, and supported Indigenous communities around the world through her service with the United Nations, the U.S. Department of the Interior, tribal governments, and The Implementation Project.

At Colorado Law, Carpenter has built one of the nation’s leading centers for Indigenous law and governance, while mentoring generations of students and emerging leaders. A founding member of CNAIS, her scholarship and teaching bridge the classroom and real-world advocacy—advancing self-determination, expanding access to justice, and shaping the field of Indigenous rights. As a Distinguished Professor, she continues to bring vision, collaboration, and unwavering commitment to the Indigenous communities she serves.

Reflecting on the honor, Professor Carpenter expressed gratitude to the colleagues, students, tribal partners, and community members who have supported her work: “I thank everyone who has made it possible for American Indian and Indigenous Peoples Law to flourish at the University of Colorado… I am grateful for the opportunity to work with generous individuals and communities around the world.” CNAIS is honored to celebrate this well-deserved recognition and looks forward to the continued impact of Professor Carpenter’s scholarship, leadership, and service locally, nationally, and globally.
