CMCI Now - Fall 2020: #1

CMCI was founded in 2015 at a moment of revolutionary change in the ways we communicate and see ourselves as a society, and our Fall 2020 issue of CMCI Now marks the college’s five-year milestone—cover to cover—with the designs, images and stories of over 25 students and recent alumni.

As we celebrate the new college, we realize that our successes would not be possible without the strong foundation established by our legacy programs in the Department of Communication and the former School of Journalism and Mass Communication, and the thousands of alumni who graduated from these programs and remain supporters of CMCI today.

I was reminded of this strong foundation over the weekend when our story on the retirement of Assistant Dean of Student Success Steve Jones––who has been with the university for 44 ½ years––was met with tweets from alumni expressing their gratitude for Steve’s steady hand in shaping their college careers and preparing them for professional success. If you’d like to share a message with Steve, I encourage you to do so on our virtual message board.

While preparing her master’s thesis, Autumn Tyler (MMediaSt’20) traveled 4,395 miles and took over a thousand photographs of Black LGBTQ+ artists for an exhibit called Roots. Self. Gaze. Now earning her PhD in media studies, Tyler writes that the experience taught her that, in order to move forward and grow, sometimes you must return to your roots.

Journalism Instructor and Assistant Dean for Student Success Steve Jones started his career at CU in 1976. Credited by alumni for setting “countless careers in motion,” teaching “with an open heart and open door,” and having “the greatest sly sense of humor and the best tie collection,” Jones will retire this December after 44 years.
