We would like to extend our congratulations to Nabilah Carlon who has been promoted to Senior Instructor with a working title of “Teaching Associate Professor”! Nabilah is no stranger to the Department of Chemistry as she received her Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry in 2008 under the direction of Professor Veronica Vaida. In 2011 Nabilah joined our department as a Lecturer and became an Instructor in 2013. Courses she has taught include Introductory Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry I and II, General Chemistry I and II, General Chemistry I and II Laboratory, General Chemistry for Engineers Laboratory, and Physical Chemistry I and II. Her recently awarded “Climate Across the Curriculum” grant from the College of Arts and Science will allow her to integrate climate information into her courses in the upcoming academic year. Nabilah’s departmental service has included, among others, serving on our Curriculum Committee, serving as Interim Director of General Chemistry Labs, and training and mentoring our Teaching and Learning Assistants and starting and facilitating the Peer Mentorship in Chemistry Program for our undergraduate chemistry students with the help of our advisors in chemistry. Outside of our department, Nabilah has served on BFA-Academic Affairs Committee, the American Chemical Society Exam Writing Committee and most recently the Parking Advisory Committee. Some of her awards and honors include being an ASSETT Faculty Fellow, and being a selected participant in the Online Teaching Academy. In addition, her students have nominated her for the Marinus Smith Award and she was invited to present for the Miramontes Arts and Sciences Program Colloquium Series in Fall 2021.

Tarek Sammakia, Professor and Interim Chair of the Department of Chemistry says, “Nabilah is one of our most accomplished educators whose students regularly praise not only her pedagogy, but also her caring attitude. The department is lucky to count her among our faculty, especially given the remarkable breadth of courses she has taught, and the extensive service she has performed. I’m happy to give her my heartfelt congratulations!”

Nabilah’s impact on the department and our students has been substantial and we congratulate her on her well-deserved promotion!
