I have never traveled for education or studied abroad but what I have done is moved 3 times and went to 5 different schools. What I found was that with each new place that I lived I met people with different interests but more importantly different interpretations of the world. The more I moved the I began to see the extreme and valuable differences between people. I still remember that day that my friend Amy shared her pork blood cubes with me. At the time I was in 4th grade and the idea of frozen blood made me uncomfortable to say the least. Yet I still tried the food she offered me, this small act of kindness meant a lot to me and it was one of the first times that I that I saw the complexity and value of difference. The more I saw how much the people around me influenced my interests and success the more I saw the value in being surrounded by a diverse group of people. I am prepared for the Global Engineering RAP because I am more than excited to experience and grow from the diverse group I hope to meet.
I would like for the person down the hall from me to share some interests such as climbing or baking but also bring unique interests or ideas. I would like to be able to interact with my neighbors through shared interests but I feel that I learn best when surrounded by motivated people with diverse ideas. I would describe myself as liberal but would benefit if some of my neighbors were to hold different political views as long as they would be willing to discuss. To get specific my ideal neighbor would be a rock climbing, sword fighting centrist who advocates for a return to feudalism.
I have found that I learn best when I am surrounded by academically motivated students. I realize that will unknowingly meet the level of work ethic and professionalism of those around me. I have used this information to push myself academically by surrounding myself with people I aspire to be like. When I first heard about the Engineering RAP at Boulder I knew that it would be perfect for me. The thought of a community centered around a common academic interest and future is exactly what I need to learn effectively. I love to connect people’s passions to complete a common goal. An example of this would be when I brought together my friends who liked creating films, history and psychology to create an infomercial for my school’s IB diploma. At Boulder I am excited to continue this with people who have even more specified interests.
