One of the best experiences of my life was traveling to Patagonia, Chile in 2017 with my parents and sister. Instead of choosing a traditional vacation to Hawaii or Mexico, my sister, as a college graduation gift, decided to go to the Southernmost tip of Chile to backpack over 100 miles in just over a week. At the time, I had no idea the amazing trip I was about to go on despite the many physical and mental challenges it imposed. Between hiking 12-15 miles each day on difficult mountainous terrain and extremely variable weather, the trip turned out to be no easy feat. However, I now look back on the incredible pictures and amazing memories while laughing at some of the hardships. The trip was perfectly timed with my Spanish education as I got to experiment with talking to native speakers and helping my family after having studied the language for 3 years in middle school. But hands down the best part of the trip was the guide that we had for the entire trip. Chacho, the nicest and most athletic person I have ever met, made sure the trip was amazing and saved our lives multiple times throughout the trip. One such story my family continuously retells is when we were stuck in white-out conditions hiking over John Garner Pass, the hardest stint of the trip, with incredibly steep terrain for nearly a kilometer. Just as the weather started to get worse, my family and Chacho found two people, clearly lost, hiking in the wrong direction. Chacho quickly flagged them down and had them join our group without thinking twice. Not even half an hour later we were hiking straight up in white-out conditions unable to see even two people ahead of us. Thanks to his quick thinking and skilled guidance he undoubtedly saved both their and our lives. Thanks to Chacho’s lessons I now make sure to always lend a hand to people in need no matter the situation and I hope to people equally incredible people throughout college in the Global Engineering RAP.
It's hard to say the exact type of person I’d want to live near in the Global Engineering RAP. The main quality I would hope for is motivation to learn while also choosing to have fun when possible. Balancing both things ensure a successful college education while also connecting with new people and creating life-long friendships. However, reading about the program and its goals makes it clear to me that this is exactly the type of person in the Global Engineering RAP. So, beyond these traits, I would want a neighbor that is willing to help with classes and difficult subjects when needed but is also willing to come to me when they need help in order to better both of us. Furthermore, someone equally dedicated to meeting and interacting with new and different types of people to create new connections and experience different cultures and mindsets firsthand.
I have always enjoyed Stem Education throughout high school as math and computers are a strong suit of mine. Yet, this never stopped my interest in the other subjects including history and humanities. Though I decided to go into an engineering program I always hoped for an opportunity like Global Engineering RAP where I could make connections and further my college education beyond Engineering and Computer Science. The program’s commitment to making a difference in the community and connecting like-minded students hoping to help each other and foster new relationships is incredibly appealing. I plan to work as hard as I can on top of my engineering classes to expand my understanding of the people and cultures I will meet and study in the Global Engineering RAP. In doing so I would like to teach others about myself and my culture just as they do to me.
