The summer after my freshman year of high school my grandma and I traveled to Madagascar for a week and a half of hiking and exploring. While there it was impossible not to notice the technological and resource differences between Madagascar and the United States. Many of the towns we drove through had little to no electricity, aside from the capital city, Antananarivo. Large areas of the country did not have the resources to properly filter their water. Although it was a beautiful trip and I encountered many different biomes and animals, I could not help but to think about how little access they had to clean water, electricity, and medicine. This prepared me for the Global Engineering RAP because it made me think about how fortunate we are to have access to these basic resources and sparked a desire to help people obtain the same level of availability.
When living in the Global Engineering RAP, I hope to be in company with like-minded, enthusiastic individuals. I want to live near people that take their academics seriously and understand things that might pose a serious distraction. That being said, I also would like to live with people that need some of the same things I like. Time outdoors and with friends, get-togethers to study as a group as opposed to individually, the occasional off-day, things that college students look forward to when considering school. I wish to be surrounded by people that are willing to help. I appreciate when my peers notice someone struggling and reach out to help them as opposed to staying to themselves and hoping the other person finds their own way. I want to live down the hall from an academic, a fellow student, and most importantly, someone I can call a friend.
I believe everyone should have equal access to things like clean water and electricity and medicine and I hope that, through the engineering RAP, I am able to reach those people through engineering tactics and ensure that everyone has equal access to life's necessities. The Global Engineering RAP would give me the opportunity to apply my engineering knowledge across the globe and maximize the effects of my studies. I also believe that participating in these sorts of hand-on projects will improve my ability to apply my engineering knowledge to real-world problems and enhance my problem-solving abilities. As a member of the residential community I plan to help make it just that: a community. I plan to connect with other students in the program and make it feel like a home while also providing an outlet for help in any way I possibly can. I wish to be a scholar and a friend alongside the other engineers in the residential community and impact as many people as we possibly can, in and outside of the Global Engineering RAP.
