One of the most significant memories in my life was when my parents sincerely apologized for the first time.
“We’re sorry for raising you with toxic values. Our culture has validated detachment and excessive pride, and we’re truly sorry for contributing to it.”
It was the first time I’d ever seen my parents cry in front of all of my siblings. At the time, I couldn’t understand why they adopted such an awful method of parenting in the first place. That was until I visited my parents’ motherland Taiwan.
My family and I visit Taiwan every few years to see family and friends. I love the street food, night markets, and the countryside of Taiwan 一 they’re aspects I look forward to experiencing whenever I travel back. However, what stands out to me the most is seeing the environment that my parents grew up in. I saw that many other parents also shared my parents’ values. I saw the similarities in the way they talked to their children and about their children.
These values have been passed down from generation to generation and have been deeply ingrained into their environment. Hundreds of years of history are very difficult to unravel. I applaud my parents for stopping the toxic method of parenting, but there are still other aspects that need to be worked on.
It’s incredibly important to understand different cultures and the history behind them. Although parenting isn’t something that I can solve with engineering, this was still an incredibly valuable lesson for me. I must understand the history behind each culture before I begin to help others. It’s very difficult to fix a problem that has been persisting throughout multiple generations. Only through empathy and understanding can I truly make a significant change.

I want the person living down the hall from me to be collaborative and helpful. I want someone who I can go to for advice on homework or a robotics project, as well as someone who is willing to work with me on other endeavors. I want to be able to collaborate on anything with them because collaboration is vital to any project in engineering.
I also want them to be open to watching the newest anime, sitcom, or possibly going on hikes around the Flatirons. Ideally, this person would not have a fear of bugs because I am deathly afraid of them.
I want them to be open to receiving help; I always love helping out friends with their projects or homework.
Being in Kittredge dorm will be beneficial because I’ll always be surrounded by people with different skill sets. In that kind of environment, I’ll be able to get advice on my projects from people who specialize in different areas. I know that the people in the dorm will all be incredibly talented and hardworking, and I want to be a part of that community. I want to contribute as much as I can to the community as much as I gain from it.

I want to be a part of the Global Engineering RAP at CU for two reasons: to expand my cultural awareness and become a more balanced engineer.
First, I value empathy and connection with other people. Whether it be through their cultures, shared interests, or opinions, I seek to understand where people are coming from and why. I must understand other peoples’ histories and undo systemic injustices that have been present throughout history. I want to be a part of a community that strives to do the same and connect to the world through empathy. Everyone has different experiences, through this program, I can augment my knowledge through this collaborative community.
Second, I value a balanced education as a future engineer. I love learning about all subjects and I believe that my broad interests will help me become a better engineer. I enjoyed learning about economics and history in my high school curriculum, and although they are not STEM-related, they widen my perspective on the world’s issues. Since the program teaches students how to become engineers in a global context, I can use that knowledge to broaden my perspective instead of purely focusing on a STEM-oriented method of problem-solving.
As a member of the Global Engineering RAP program, I can become a better engineer by expanding my cultural awareness and engineering perspective as well as being a part of an incredibly supportive community that aims to do the same.
