Mechanical Engineering
English (5), French (2/3)
I unfortunately haven't traveled or studied abroad, as I am yet to have the opportunity to leave the country. However, as someone who has always wanted to travel, study, or work abroad, I am always looking to find ways to become more culturally fluent and deepen my knowledge of other countries. I frequently read about international affairs, and I have developed a deep interest in using engineering to help make a difference on a global level.
If I were to walk down the hall in the Global Engineering RAP, I’d hope to find the kind of person who leaves their door open during the day so that people can come in and say hi. They would be a fellow engineering student who has a passion for ethical engineering and cultural understanding. Aside from their deep love for STEM, I would also love to live around somebody who has an appreciation for the humanities. This person would be friendly and positive, somebody who treats those around them with respect and understanding. Whether it was a homework question or an emergency, they would always be willing to help their peers. They would be respectful of the building they live in and the people they live around by abiding by dorm protocols like quiet hours. I’d hope they would be engaged in the college experience, and always be eager to connect with the people living around them. While living in the Global Engineering RAP, I picture being surrounded by friendly, insightful, respectful, and well-rounded students whom I could befriend and grow with during college.
My decision to pursue engineering extends beyond my fascination with science: it is rooted in my desire to change the world around me. I believe ethical and sustainable engineering is crucial in order to secure a safer, happier future, and I believe engineers should work to improve the human condition. When I discovered the Global Engineering RAP, I immediately connected to its mission. I want to focus on engineering issues like public transportation and water pollution in college, and I want to understand the environmental and societal impacts of my engineering decisions. Beyond engineering, through the RAP I will deepen my personal understanding of the issues occurring around the world and have more opportunities to continue to improve my French. I unfortunately had to drop French my senior year because I wanted to take a second science class, and it is a major goal of mine to continue learning the language in college. My personal and academic goals, and my desire to better understand cultures around the world, make me a perfect fit for the Engineering Global RAP.
In the residential community, I will contribute by being a source of support and connection for my peers. Part of the reason I want to join the RAP is to be in an engaged engineering circle and participate in the opportunities that the RAP provides. I value, and prefer, team-style learning, and will take advantage of living and working with other engineering majors. My open-minded nature and never-ending desire to learn will also make me a valuable member of the community, as I am an active listener and I appreciate perspectives that are different from mine. In the RAP I will work with my peers to grow as members of society.
As a student, joining the Global Engineering RAP will greatly benefit my education, help me connect with my peers, and allow me to continue to diversify my skills and knowledge. As a future engineer, however, the Global Engineering RAP will provide me with the foundation needed to become an ethical, well-rounded, and creative engineer who can tackle projects and problems that exist beyond my own backyard.
